Students in the island province of Marinduque are getting a glimpse into the future of learning through the initiative of introducing virtual reality (VR) technology to local schools and universities.
During the Virtual Reality Forum of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) at Marinduque State University (MarSU) on June 26, the DOST promoted a digital innovation in education across educators and students to explore the use of such immersive technology.
The forum featured live demonstrations of VR, allowing the participants to experience first-hand—ranging from interactive simulations to educational storytelling.
Organizers say it is part of a broader effort to integrate advanced technology into learning environments, especially in island provinces.
“Virtual reality is not about the future, it is already here. This technology has the power to transform how students learn and engage with information,” Dr. Randy Digma, Associate Professor at MarSU told the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
From museum experiences to science reports, VR allows students to present and absorb information in more dynamic and creative ways.
Digma added that the technology could also enhance heritage preservation and technical training particularly in areas with limited access to physical infrastructure.
Also, Bernie Caringal of the Provincial Science and Technology Center said that virtual learning is already taking shape in the province by transforming the traditional classroom into a more immersive and interactive environment.
“With students lining up to try on VR, you can see their curiosity turning into excitement. This isn’t just about technology but rather opening minds to new ways of learning. We’re seeing the early steps of a shift that could redefine education in communities like ours,” Caringal said.
Earlier, a VR Booth was also featured during the Regional Science, Technology and Innovation Week (RSTW) in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro from May 28 to 30, where it drew strong public interest.
