SailGP has launched a new mixed reality app called ‘RaceScape XR,’ which the league describes as the first XR experience in sailing. The release comes just days before the Germany Sail Grand Prix begins in Sassnitz. The app was built for the Apple Vision Pro and combines SailGP’s live production feeds with a range of interactive features.
Fans can follow the full World Feed broadcast, view onboard video from any team in the fleet, and see live leaderboards all within a single interface. An augmented reality mode takes the experience to the next level with a 3D tabletop experience that shows boat positions, tactical overlays, and “ghost boat” competitors for added context and comparison in real-time.
“We’re continually pushing the boundaries on our digital fan experience and development of cutting edge technology to bring our Grand Prix events to life for our fans, and provide them with the ability to truly immerse themselves in the heart of the racing action,“ said Matt Lord, Director of Technology & Digital Systems at SailGP, in an official news release.
RaceScape XR runs on SailGP’s custom LiveLine graphics system, which has won an Emmy for its role in making sailing easier to follow. The technology is central to how SailGP presents its races and reaches new fans. With this new app, the league brings that same approach into XR, giving viewers a more immersive way to experience the sport, on-site or at home.
