Transport for Wales has become the first UK train operator to adopt virtual reality training for front-line staff. Developed with Scottish-based Denova, the software replicates real-world scenarios on the new Class 197 trains, allowing trainees to practice in a classroom before moving to live operations.

The VR system includes dispatch procedures, responding to signal failures, emergency stops, fire situations, and handling suspicious items. Trainees can also interact with a virtual onboard phone, connecting to instructors role-playing as drivers or signallers.

According to Transport for Wales trainers, the technology bridges the gap between theory and practical experience while improving preparedness for rare but critical safety incidents. Denova described the project as an industry first, noting interest from other UK rail operators.
