The Government of Canada has recently announced that the Virtual Health Hub (VHH) has joined the Coordinated Accessible National (CAN) Health Network to help expand access to health care in Saskatchewan’s remote, rural, Indigenous, and northern communities.
Since 2019, the federal government has invested CAD $42 million in the CAN Health Network, which connects Canadian health technology companies with health care providers across the country. The addition of VHH will support the deployment of new digital tools in outlying communities, as well as support access to care for people across the province.
Two new projects will be launched through the partnership:
- Luxsonic Technologies, a Saskatchewan-based developer of virtual reality (VR) tools for medical imaging, will provide VR technology to support faster and more accurate diagnoses in remote regions.
- Nova Scotia–based Virtual Hallway will supply a digital consultation platform enabling family physicians to connect with specialists more quickly, improving access to expert care across the network.
Luxsonic’s platform provides a fully immersive radiology workflow in a standalone VR headset, replacing traditional workstations and monitors with high-definition virtual imaging displays. The company’s Virtual Imaging Platform integrates viewing, workflow management, communication, AI-enhanced tools, and teaching resources into a single system. Authorized in Canada as a Class II medical device for remote radiology, it supports diagnostic image review, real-time collaboration, and secure integration with existing medical imaging infrastructure.
The Government of Canada stated that since its launch, the CAN Health Network has enabled entrepreneurs across Canada to grow, while strengthening the country’s universal health care system by encouraging homegrown innovation. The initiative has grown to include 50 “Edges” — health care organizations and authorities participating in technology trials and adoption.
“By investing in the CAN Health Network, we’re doing two things at once: supporting Canadian businesses with smart new health care ideas, and helping patients get better care closer to home,” said the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development). “The addition of the Virtual Health Hub will make it easier for rural, remote and Indigenous communities in Saskatchewan to access cutting-edge care.”
To date, the network has supported 99 Canadian health technology companies through 127 commercialization projects and generated more than CAD $698 million in revenue, with 2,331 jobs created as of April 2025, according to the Government of Canada.
